Kindergarten - Level K-1
Lesson 2: Basic Vowels & Consonants
The Building Blocks
Now that you know the story of Hangul, it's time to meet the letters! We'll start with the most basic vowels and consonants. Remember the philosophy from Lesson 1? The vowels are based on elements of nature, and the consonants are based on the shape of your mouth. Let's dive in!
The Basic Vowels
These are the core sounds that form the heart of every syllable. Hover over each card to see its English sound.
(like in father)
(like in son)
(like in home)
(like in moon)
(like push, but smile)
(like in see)
The Basic Consonants
These are the starting sounds for many Korean words. Let's learn the first ten.
Combining Letters into Syllables
Great job! You've learned your first set of Korean letters. In Korean, letters are grouped into "syllable blocks." You always start a syllable with a consonant, followed by a vowel.
For example, to write "ga", you combine ㄱ (g) and ㅏ (a) to make 가. To write "noo", you combine ㄴ (n) and ㅜ (oo) to make 누.
Practice reading these: 더, 모, 비, 수, 이, 저. You're already starting to read Korean!
